Union Station Technology Center is developing multiple locations in the South Bend area, including its original downtown location at historic Union Station, which previously served as a major commuter rail center from 1928 to 1971. Located approximately 90 miles east of Chicago, Union Station Technology Center is positioned at a strategic location along a major rail corridor between Chicago and New York. Union Station has now been transformed into a state of the art hub for digital information, and is a key location because of easy access and close proximity to fiber optic lines, a local power grid and available space to house data center equipment. Union Station recently acquired an additional 1 million square-foot facility immediately south of its existing 100,000-square-foot location at the former rail station. The facility, which was formerly home to the Studebaker Automobile Company, provides a contiguous development opportunity for Union Station and serves as a unique combination of new age technology coupled with the adaptive reuse of historically significant structures.

“Our goal is to extend Union Station’s technology offerings to as many businesses as possible, and Comcast Business will help make this a reality,” said Shane Fimbel, chief operating officer at Union Station Technology Center. “Our focus is to provide the highest quality space, power and connectivity at affordable prices. Having direct fiber connections from Comcast’s network to our facilities gives customers another powerful technology tool they can use to help run their businesses and gain a competitive advantage.”

Direct fiber connections from Comcast’s national network will be provided to each Union Station facility, allowing them to use Comcast Business Ethernet Dedicated Internet, Ethernet Private Line and Ethernet Network Service at speeds ranging from 50 Megabits per second (Mbps) to 1 Gigabit per second (Gbps). These Ethernet services will enable faster file transfers, access to data, videos and other information stored and housed at Union Station data centers, and Internet access.

“As more businesses move applications out of their offices and into offsite data centers, the need for reliable, high-performance Ethernet connectivity will play an important role in getting companies access to their information,” said Jay Dirkmaat, vice president, Comcast Business Services, Greater Chicago Region. “Comcast sees this as a strong partnership that can help turn the South Bend area into a true technology hub for local organizations.”

Union Station follows other data centers that have turned to Comcast Business to provide high-performance Ethernet to support their technology requirements. Recent examples include Lifeline Data Centers in Indianapolis in 2012 and Colohouse in Miami in 2011.
