October 3, 2018 – Sean McCarthy has been named vice president of Business Development and Strategic Initiatives for Comcast’s Greater Chicago Region. In his role, McCarthy will be responsible for identifying and developing strategic business initiatives; overseeing the deployment of advanced networks in emerging and existing commercial and residential corridors and properties; and working with customers and public and private partners to innovate and find new ways to incorporate connectivity and advanced technologies into real estate developments and other types of projects. His focus will be on the Chicago area and the rest of Illinois, northwest Indiana and southwest Michigan.
Before coming to Comcast, McCarthy served as director of the Illinois Department of Commerce. In that role, he provided leadership and strategic guidance to the department’s efforts to grow the state’s economy by encouraging businesses to invest and create jobs; connecting resources to support entrepreneurs and investors; positioning Illinois as a global business destination for foreign direct investment; encouraging top talent to live and work here; and promoting Illinois as world-class tourism and film destination.
In addition, McCarthy oversaw programs and services managed by the state Offices of Business Development; Community Assistance; Community Development; Employment & Training; Energy & Recycling; Entrepreneurship, Innovation & Technology; Film; Tourism; Trade & Investment; and Urban Assistance.
Prior to that, McCarthy served as a policy adviser for Economic Development in the Office of the Governor, where he oversaw policy development for five state agencies, including the Department of Commerce. As the governor’s liaison, he worked with agency directors and senior staff to transform state government and improve Illinois’ economic climate.
Before joining the governor’s Office, McCarthy worked as deputy chief of staff for Illinois 14th District Congressman Randy Hultgren, where he was the primary in-district adviser on legislation and policy. He also spent six years at Nicor Gas as a senior community relations director. In this role, he worked with government officials and community leaders on behalf of the utility, while educating other community stakeholders about natural gas.
McCarthy earned his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science at Stonehill College in Easton, MA, and his Master of Business Administration degree in General Management from Dominican University in River Forest, IL. He currently lives in Geneva, IL.
