Comcast is Nation’s Number One Provider of Gigabit Internet Service

Nearly all of Comcast’s Greater Chicago Region footprint has access to gig service

Speeds increasing fast: Around 75% of local residential Xfinity Internet customers now have speeds of over 100 Mbps, compared to less than 20% just two years ago

October 22, 2018 – Almost two years after the Greater Chicago Region became one of the first metropolitan areas in the U.S. to introduce residential gigabit Internet speed from Comcast, the company announced that it’s now the nation’s largest provider of gigabit broadband internet service. Its ultra-fast Xfinity Gigabit Internet and Comcast Business Gigabit services are now available to nearly all of the 58 million homes and businesses in the company’s service footprint, including the Chicago region.

Overall, average residential Internet speeds have been increasing rapidly in the Chicago region: Today, around 75% of Chicago region Xfinity Internet customers subscribe to speeds of 100 megabits per second (Mbps) or more, compared to less than 20% in 2016.  Comcast has increased internet speeds 17 times in 17 years and doubled the capacity of its broadband network approximately every 18 to 24 months.  In addition, the Xfinity WiFi Network has reached more than 19 million hotspots, with more than 1.7 million in the Chicago region alone.  To make all of this possible, Comcast has invested more than $3.2 billion in technology and infrastructure across Illinois from 2011 to 2017.

“Comcast has been investing heavily in its network in the region in an effort to deliver the best possible customer experience,” said John Crowley, Comcast’s Regional Senior Vice President.  “By making these investments in gig speeds, network capacity and reliability and WiFi coverage and control, we’ve set a foundation for delivering the next-gen broadband and WiFi-based services that will define the modern digital home.”

Because Comcast delivers its Xfinity Gigabit Internet and Comcast Business Gigabit services over its existing network, installation is easy and doesn’t require construction or the need to dig up lawns, driveways or sidewalks.  Often, customers don’t even need a service visit. They can use self-installation kits to install the service themselves.
