Tony Dungy, National Football League great and Superbowl-winning former head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, and Elgin, IL, Mayor Dave Kaptain met yesterday with members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dundee Township to talk about their life experiences, the importance of teamwork and the value of school.
“When I was coaching, my goal wasn’t only to win,” said Dungy. “It was also to do the right thing, be a role model and represent my community well.”
In addition to his historic role in professional football, Dungy is the national spokesman for Comcast’s Internet Essentials program, which provides eligible low-income families broadband Internet access at home for about $10 a month; the option to purchase a computer for under $150; and access to free digital literacy training in print, online, and in-person.
“Internet access, especially at home, can have a game-changing impact on education and the lives of young people,” said Dungy. “It really levels the playing field for those who might not have the opportunities they deserve just because they never had access to the tools and resources that drive success in today’s technologically advanced world.”
“As a mayor, I recognize that Internet access is critical to everything from education to workforce development,” said Mayor Kaptain. “My hope is that every Elgin student and every Elgin family has access to the tools they need succeed in school, at work and in life.”
The 10- to 12-year-old Boys & Girls Clubs members in the room with Dungy and Kaptain were given the opportunity to attend as a reward for completing a variety of educational modules offered by the organization.
