The Affordable Connectivity Program Can Help Make Digital Equity a Reality
Comcast to Donate 200 Laptops to Initiative
November 17, 2022 – Faith-based leaders joined today to announce an initiative designed to connect more Illinois residents to the internet and make digital equity a reality in minority communities. On Sunday, November 20, 2022, pastors and other faith leaders representing more than 250 churches in locations across the state will share information with their congregations about the federal Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), which can cover up to $30 per month of eligible households’ Internet and/or mobile service bills.
In addition, Comcast announced that it will donate 200 laptops to several churches as part of the company’s long-standing commitment to advancing digital equity.
“Churches and pastors are guiding forces in the spiritual, emotional and physical health and well-being in their communities,” said Bishop Simon Gordon of the Triedstone FGBC of Chicago. “Internet connectivity and digital skills can open a world of unlimited possibilities. They can help our children succeed in school and prepare our adults for work and other opportunities that may not be open to them now. With the availability of ACP – which can cover the full cost of some of the internet services available in Illinois, eligible households can get service for free, and we can make digital equity a reality.”
“Comcast is committed to helping the communities we serve each and every day. We’re especially proud to be part of this statewide initiative to get more low-income households connected,” said Carl Jones, Jr., Comcast’s Regional Vice President of External and Government Affairs. “Comcast has been working with members of the faith-based community in Illinois for over a decade to close the digital divide. As pillars of their communities, we know that churches can help spread the word about existing programs and other digital resources that can get congregants connected.”
Jones noted the importance of being online for everything ranging from work, education, healthcare and banking, to staying in touch with friends and family.
