Celebrating Women’s History Month in Illinois at Comcast

Women's History Month, how to celebrate women's history month

Women’s History Month is a time to celebrate the remarkable achievements and contributions of women throughout history. At Comcast, we acknowledge the vital role women have played in shaping our society and the telecommunications industry. From Ada Lovelace, celebrated as the first computer programmer to Radia Perlman, whose invention helped stabilized information traffic on the Internet, we celebrate trailblazers who have paved the way for future generations. Join us as we highlight the stories of inspiring women and their impact on our company and the world.

Comcast is home to many Employee Resource Groups (ERG), including the Women’s Network, which are employee-led groups that bring colleagues together to host networking events, community service activities and educational offerings across our footprint.

To celebrate Women’s History Month, Women’s Network members share more about the organization and their careers. Shanna Torres is an analyst on the internal technical support team and has been with Comcast seven years. She is also part of the leadership team of the Women’s Network ERG for Comcast’s Greater Chicago region. We sat down with Shanna to talk about her career and the Women’s Network.

Tell us a little about yourself

I’ve been with Comcast for seven years and I’m currently in the IT support department. My end goal is to move into Project Management. I’m also a mom to three young adult kids – my son is 28 and my daughters are 27 and 25.

When did you join the Women’s Network and what drew you to the organization?

I became a part of the Women’s Network a few years after I joined Comcast and moved into my role as co-lead for the marketing group back in 2023. I love the work that the Women’s Network has done in the community for men and women. I appreciate the effort that is put in to be a positive influence in our communities and with our neighbors.

What is the best part about being part of the Women’s Network?

The best part of being a part of this organization is that I get to make an impact. I get to be a positive influence. With the help of Comcast and the ERG, we can help shape new minds and grow in the idea of benefiting the group as a whole.

Can you tell us about a colleague who inspire you?

I have been inspired by many of the women in this company. One of those women is Nastassia who has been my leader for a few years and has also become a mentor in my career and my personal life. She is someone that will be there to push you out of your comfort zone, but she will also encourage you to be the very best you can be. With her guidance I have accomplished more in my career growth and can see a path that once wasn’t so clear.

Tell us about an impactful event held by the Women’s Network

I have the pleasure of being able to be a part of so many great events. When I get the chance to be a part of those that help women who have struggled from domestic abuse, that is very close to my heart. Being a survivor myself, I appreciate the effort that the women’s network puts in to make those struggling feel connected and valuable.

What advice to you have for women who are starting their careers?

One piece of advice I can give for someone starting their career is NEVER GIVE UP! You may not see how valuable you are, but you are more than what you see. You have a purpose, and you were meant to be here.
